Who Needs a TRV or eTA?
Foreign nationals require either a TRV or an eTA to visit Canada temporarily. This includes:
Tourists
International students (on study permits)
Temporary foreign workers (on work permits)
Business visitors
You only need one of these authorizations — not both.
eTA: For Visa-Exempt Travellers Arriving by Air
If you’re from a visa-exempt country and traveling to Canada by air, you’ll need to obtain an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before your departure.
The eTA is digitally linked to your passport.
It is valid for 5 years or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
It is only required for air travel (not for land or sea entries).
Note:
U.S. citizens do not require a TRV or eTA.
U.S. Green Card holders, regardless of nationality, must obtain an eTA to enter Canada.
TRV: For Nationals of Non-Visa-Exempt Countries
If you are not from a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before traveling to Canada.
Issued by a Canadian visa office abroad.
Indicates you meet the requirements for entry as a visitor.
Can be issued for single or multiple entries.
Generally allows a 6-month stay for tourists.
Students and workers may be admitted for a longer period, based on individual circumstances.
Extensions can be requested from within Canada.
Important:
A TRV does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival, a Canada Border Services Officer will determine whether you are admissible. You must demonstrate that your visit is temporary and that you intend to leave Canada when your authorized stay expires.
Additional Considerations
Medical exams may be required for certain visitors, especially if:
You plan to stay long-term,
You have visited specific countries recently, or
You intend to work in particular occupations (e.g., health, childcare).
Biometrics: Citizens of certain countries must provide fingerprints and photos when applying.
Criminal or medical inadmissibility may prevent you from entering Canada.
You must be able to show proof of financial support for your entire stay.
