Programs Managed Under Express Entry
Express Entry handles applications for the following Canadian immigration programs:
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) – select streams only
Who Can Apply Under Express Entry?
To be considered under Express Entry, you must first meet the eligibility criteria of one of the immigration programs listed above. Each program has specific requirements related to factors such as:
Once eligible, you can create an online profile that includes your background information, which serves as an expression of interest to immigrate to Canada.
How the Express Entry Pool Works
All eligible candidates are placed into a common Express Entry pool, where they are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Periodically, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites top-ranked candidates to apply for Permanent Residence through Invitations to Apply (ITAs).
Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), you must submit your permanent residence application within the deadline specified in the invitation, usually within 60 days.
If your application is successful, you and your eligible dependants (spouse and children) can come to Canada as Permanent Residents, starting the journey toward Canadian citizenship.
Not Invited Yet? Stay in the Pool
If you don’t receive an ITA right away, your profile remains active in the pool for up to 12 months. During this time, you may improve your CRS score and increase your chances of being selected. If no ITA is received after 12 months, you can submit a new profile and re-enter the pool.
Understanding the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)
The CRS is a merit-based points system used to assess and rank Express Entry candidates. Points are awarded based on several categories, including:
Core human capital factors (e.g., age, education, work experience, language skills)
Spouse or common-law partner factors (if applicable)
Skill transferability factors
Additional points for provincial nominations or valid job offers
