Who Can Claim Refugee Protection in Canada?

You may be eligible if:

You face torture, risk to life, or cruel and unusual treatment or punishment
You are currently in Canada or arriving at a port of entry (airport, land border, or seaport)

Types of Protection

Canada offers protection under two categories:

Convention Refugee – someone with a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country
Person in Need of Protection – someone who would face torture, risk to life, or cruel and unusual treatment if returned
